If you haven’t already noticed, Halloween is here.
While many born again Christians do not participate in this day, there are many others who do and see it as a fun time to dress up in costumes and pretend. Have you ever pretended to be someone you’re not?
Well if the truth be told many have not removed their masks. Instead they’re continuing to go through life still pretending to be someone they’re not.
You see one face, when they’re really another.
Those who choose to pretend to be someone or something they’re not often do so because of a deeper issue that could be going on.
Let me give you an example, have you ever watched The Nutty Professor starring Eddie Murphy? Though not my favourite movie, I remember thinking ‘wow’ the extent to which someone will go, to get the attention of another, especially when they’re not happy with them-self; can be unfortunate.
Here’s a brief review of the movie:
“A professor Sherman Klump (Murphy) falls for a grad student Carla (Jada Pinkett), but he’s too shy and self-conscious about his weight to make a move. When Klump invents a weight-loss potion and tests it on himself, he’s transformed from a sweet, overweight guy into attractive, incredibly arrogant womanizer Buddy Love. Buddy tries to seduce Carla, and the inner Sherman eventually tries to conquer his horrible alter ego and return to his normal, good-natured self.”
The life lesson in this movie came at the end when Sherman said “Life is not about how much you weigh, but being happy with yourself.”
What about you? Are you happy with yourself? Or is your unhappiness causing you to pretend to be someone you’re not?
You know, the other day I came across a quote that I couldn’t agree with more. It said, “One of the greatest challenges in life is being yourself in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else. You don’t have to settle! It’s simply a choice you make every day.” Shannon Tobin
Sherman, in The Nutty Professor, had the choice to either pursue Carla as himself or his “alter ego”.
SRW Men, no need to pretend to have what you don’t have or act like someone you’re not to win a woman over. Learn to love everything about your fearfully and wonderfully made self.
SRW Ladies, it is important that you are not superficial. That way you won’t get caught up in what a man has and neglect what is most important about him; his character.
Finally, this Halloween, put away your costumes and get dressed with the belt of truth.
Only then, will you be authentic with everyone you meet. This includes on-line and off-line.
Simply, be you!
